Bag of wind

Is it a matter of writing implements that we write more
to say less, or—with the power of large numbers in play—
do we have to face the truth that we have always been
the blabbering sort, only back then largely confined
to a tavern and a church porch?

Homo insouciant

Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don’t know what they want?
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Yuval Noah Harari

Little Gil and Frank have always been fastidious boys,
and that’s never changed, even after they got their pee-haitch-dees.
Now doctors Gamesh and Enstein play ‘I spy’ with a man
with soulful, if somewhat dispirited and unsympathetic, eyes,
pretending that someone is thinking about his future,
even though no one has ever told him that when it’s time to age,
a Deus is no less insouciant than a Neanderthal.

No pata negra

When destiny is the most you can bear,
personal extinction is not a threat;
it’s an escape route from the horror of choice,
yet just saying that makes it sound trivial,
like a barking dog’s obligations: a scheduled comfort
or love amongst the travellers.

But you don’t have to be upset to be kind,
even if nature does make fun of us
and it feels ridiculous to be hunted
by literary characters we killed—
as if we didn’t care, except we do—
instead of letting them run their course.

Not much of a lesson

I had a stew
made with butternut squash,
sweet potatoes,
and sun-dried tomatoes
for dinner tonight—a humble result
of emptying the fridge into a pot
in the hope that the final product
would be edible—while listening to Joni
when the thought came to me
how utterly ridiculous creatures we are,
stuffing our mouths
only to excrete some hours later,
repeating it over and over again like markers
in an indefinite stretch of time between now and then,
and in the end none of us is any wiser;
everyone is just making it up as they go,
but perhaps some are better
at pretending
that they know clouds.
